Congress MP ‘surprised’ at Azad’s nomination
Newspoint Bureau

Jammu Tawi: Choudhry Lal Singh, the Congress Member Parliament, who was denied mandate for upcoming Lok Sabah elections Monday expressed surprise that he was not given a ticket for the Udhampur seat. He also rubbished the reports that his supporters have decided to cast vote in favour of BJP candidate from Udhampur, and pledged full support to Ghulam Nabi Azad, the Congress candidate for the constituency.
He however, added that Azad had announced not to contest upcoming Lok Sabah elections at a function in Kathua recently but his consent to the party high command's decision on his candidature has extremely surprised him.
"I had started campaigning 15 days earlier the party high command's decision on Azad's candidature and had asked all my activists and supporters to gear up for the contest," Singh said on phone, adding that normally a candidate is not denied party mandate if he is already representing a constituency on a party ticket.
"Tickets are normally given to the winners. I am surprised that the same has been denied to me." The Congress MP from Udhampur said that it is now up to Azad whether he will take him along or not. "I am a small leader in front of a leader like Azad. If he thinks that I can be of any help to him, I will be readily available and at his disposal," he added.
It was reported by certain media outlets on Monday that Lal Singh's supporters while protesting against Azad's candidature have threatened to vote for BJP candidate in order to register their resentment against the Congress decision of sidelining Lal Singh.
The BJP while welcoming the reports claimed that the emergence of Narendra Modi as Prime Minster has been accepted as a fact by the people of entire India at large. "We have not deliberated over the issue but as far as the support of Lal Singh's supporters to BJP is concerned, it is a positive change," said senior BJP leader Ashok Kumar Khajuria. He added that the fort of BJP in and outside Jammu and Kashmir is getting strengthened every day and whosoever wants to join the party- they we will welcome him.
